McLaughlin : “ I just believe he would be fantastic”

Shane van Gisbergen, is the driver Scott McLaughlin would most want to see compete in IndyCar.

On the latest episode of his and team-mate Josef Newgarden’s “Bus Bros” YouTube show, McLaughlin answered a fan question that asked, “If you could bring a driver from any other series into IndyCar, who would it be?”

“Shane van Gisbergen,” the 29-year-old said, “I just believe he would be fantastic, it would be interesting to see.”

Newgarden added, “I would love whoever anyone thinks is the best in the world, whether it’s a [Lewis] Hamilton or [Fernando] Alonso or [Sebastian] Vettel.

“I think they would have an interesting time going over to IndyCar and trying it.”

Before Team Penske brought him Stateside at the end of 2020, McLaughlin had won three consecutive Repco Supercars championships. He is now a two-time race winner in Indycar, the highest level of North American open-wheel competition.

His 2018 championship victory was only secured in Newcastle in the final race of the season, when he eventually defeated Van Gisbergen, who has since added the 2021 title to his 2016 championship, and who is now in the driver’s seat to win back-to-back Supercar championships

While van Gisbergen hasn’t competed internationally at the highest level of wings and slicks, his last-to-first victory in the 2021 New Zealand Grand Prix may be amongst his most famous achievements.
