In the high-stakes and high-pressure world of Formula One, achieving success requires teams and drivers to perform at their best. In a recent episode of the Mind Set Win podcast, Christian Horner, Team Principal and CEO of Oracle Red Bull Racing, shared how his intrinsic motivation and passion for the sport have been crucial components in the team’s sustained success. By focusing on enjoying the experience and embracing the challenges that come with it, Horner believes that his team has been able to achieve greater heights in the competitive world of Formula One.
“My view has always been that if you enjoy what you do, you’ll do it that much better, so it’s not just about it being a job, it has to be a passion, it has to be a desire, and there has to be a hunger and determination to want to succeed.”
During the final race of 2021 in Abu Dhabi, Christian Horner’s positive approach had a significant impact on the team. The anticipation and tension were palpable as Max Verstappen bid to win the first championship for the team since 2013. The rewards at stake were career-changing, and the pressure was inescapable. In the pre-race team meeting, Horner’s message was clear: “Whatever the outcome is of the race, go out there and enjoy it. You’ve worked all season to get to this position. It’s been an incredible season. Don’t put pressure on yourself; enjoy it and embrace the nerves.”
Christian Horner’s love for Formula One has played a significant role in his career trajectory, from taking on the role of Team Principal at Oracle Red Bull Racing at the age of 31 in 2005 to leading a team that has earned over 90 race victories, as well as six drivers’ and five constructors’ world championship titles.
According to Mind Set Win host Cédric Dumont, Horner’s framework of finding enjoyment in the present moment can lead to real satisfaction. Dumont explains this way of thinking, known as intrinsic motivation, is characterized by being driven by passion and an inner desire to succeed rather than external rewards. It’s a mindset that anyone can adopt to help them achieve their goals and find fulfillment in their endeavours.
Horner’s philosophy emphasizes finding enjoyment in the experience, not just the outcome, setting him and his team apart. Stepping back from the end goal can increase motivation and clarity while staying positive increases the chance of success. Horner’s passion for racing and ability to find joy in the experience has propelled him and his team to the top of their game, providing a valuable lesson for all.
