ARMSTRONG A “VERY GOOD CANDIDATE” FOR INDYCAR DRIVE

Dale Coyne says Marcus Armstrong would be an excellent addition to his team.

The multiple Formula 2 race winner was in action at Sebring recently, along with four other drivers as part of an Indycar Rookie Evaluation Day.

With four wins and eight Formula 2 podiums to his credit, Marcus Armstrong is looking to take the next step in his open-wheel career and if his plans come to fruition he’ll be on the NTT IndyCar Series grid next season as a contender for Rookie of the Year honours.

“Certainly, IndyCar is the thing I want to do,” Armstrong told racer.com. “There’s no secret. I’ve always been attracted to the championships from a young age because I am a Kiwi and I’ve been watching Scott Dixon kick ass since I was about two years old. I’ve always been attracted to the championship. I’d love to come, and there’s obviously nothing official, but it’s certainly my first choice. I’m working towards it.”

Asked if his performance made Armstrong a strong candidate for a third Dale Coyne Racing ride, alongside David Malukas and Takuma Sato, Coyne replied, “He’s a very good candidate for a ride with us, yeah.”

“Third car? We have to see about that. David is staying, we know that that’s all done. We’d like to get Takuma done too, but we’re not there yet. He’s in Japan trying to get details together with all his sponsors but he’s hopeful so we’re hopeful. And he’s loyal to us, and we’re going to be loyal to him.

“Marcus seems to have given up on Formula 2. He seemed enthusiastic about us and IndyCar. If we can get a third program together to run Marcus as well as David and Takuma, that would be the ideal scenario.”

With just one round remaining in the 2022 F2 Championship, Armstrong will be looking to build on this year’s three race wins and move up the drivers’ standings.

Round 14 of the 2022 F2 Championship and what could be Armstrong’s final F2 race will get underway at Yas Island between 18 to 20 November.

Time will tell, but it would be awesome to see three Kiwis on the Indycar grid in 2023!
